Xylitol is a low GI sugar alternative (also known as a sugar alcohol).
It is slowly and partially absorbed and metabolised, resulting in very negligible changes in blood glucose levels. Xylitol is just as sweet as sugar. It has a reduced kilojoule value which can be helpful in weight control and managing diabetes.
It has 40% less kilojoules than sugar. One teaspoon of sugar contains 67 kJ versus 42 kJ from Xylitol.
Xylitol is slowly and only partially absorbed in the intestine (excessive use might have a laxative effect).
